SYNOPSIS

A Syrophoenecian/Canaanite realizes that her daughter has a demon and goes to Jesus for healing. Jesus, having just been railing at his recalcitrant disciples, leaves them and, exhausted, craves to be alone. Horrified when the Syrophoenecian woman approaches him, he tells her he must feed his own "children" before throwing food to the dogs. The woman replies that even dogs gather crumbs. Her remark awakens Jesus to the possibility that he might have been sent by God to heal not only his own people, but all.

Composer's comment: Talliya, the demon-possessed daughter, has a large and dramatic role in this piece, so I recommend engaging a brave, strong actor and singer, perhaps in her teens.
