SYNOPSIS

Hannah, beloved wife of Elkanah, is unable to conceive a child. Peninnah, Elkanah's other wife, mocks her for this failure, as do Peninnah's children. The mocking becomes more intense when the family travels each year to a distant tabernacle to offer a sacrifice to God. During one such visit, Hannah prays in great anguish in the temple, promising God that if He gives her a son, she will dedicate the child to God and have him reared by the priests in the Temple. The priest Eli, observing her from a distance, fears that she is drunk. He reprimands her, and when she tells him she is not drunk, but in deep distress, his anger turns to compassion. He sends her away with a blessing. Hannah finally bears a son and names him Samuel. After the boy is weaned, she keeps her word and relinquishes Samuel to the care of Eli, to be raised in the tabernacle.
